Do You Have to Know Exactly What Happened for the Work to Help You?

Nicole asked a question I hear all the time. She had traumas from ages 10 to 20. She could feel something was in there but couldn't see it clearly. Couldn't recognize it. And she wanted to know: do you have to know exactly what happened for this work to help you?

The answer is no.

The brain stores things you never consciously registered as memories. Think about writing your name. You know how to do it. You can put sentences together without thinking. But do you remember the specific day you learned to write the letter R? Of course not. The memory is in there. You just can't access it consciously. That doesn't mean it isn't running.

Then I shared my own story.

I'd traveled for years without a problem. Then I decided to go to Hawaii. Standing in the airport, my heart started pounding through my chest. Chest tightening. First thought: am I having a heart attack? Am I going to die?

I looked around. Was it the smell? Something in the airport?

At that point I had worked with panic attack clients for years and I still didn't recognize what was happening to me as a panic attack. I just thought something was wrong with my heart. I thought I was dying.

I didn't know yet what was behind it.
