Your brain is a shape-shifter. It takes an experience (painful, overwhelming, emotionally charged) and transfers the weight of that experience onto something that was nearby when it happened.

A food. A smell. A season. A sound. Whatever was present in that moment becomes the carrier of the emotional charge.

From that point forward the brain pulls the old memory every single time you encounter that thing. Not because the thing is dangerous. Because the thing became a metaphor for something that was.

The sour milk becomes the father who forced it down. The wheat becomes the grief that was eating alongside it. The perfume becomes the person whose presence never felt safe.

You are not reacting to the food. You are reacting to what the food learned to represent.
