Movies Can Traumatize? How Stories Shape Our Brains

Ever notice how something that never actually happened… can still control your life?

When I was 18, I watched a movie with my buddies.

Months later, I was swimming across a lake in Oklahoma—no oceans, no sharks and suddenly the theme music from that movie hit me.

My brain screamed, “Sharks!”

And I swam like hell to the shore.

There were no sharks.

There was no danger.

But it felt real.

That’s how the brain works.

It learns from stories, moments, offhand comments, childhood warnings, and even movies…

And then it turns them into emotional reality.

You can build an entire life around something that never actually happened.

A misinterpretation, a story, a look, a fear.

Not because you’re broken, but because your brain is doing what it was trained to do...

To keep you alive, even when the threat isn’t real anymore.

The problem isn’t the story.

It’s what you internalized.

And that can be changed.
