Your Brain Collects Whatever You Aim It At | "Hunt for Better" by Robert Gene
You already know how to hunt.
You've been doing it your whole life.
Every no. Every slight. Every sideways look. You tracked it, mounted it, hung it on the wall, and walked that hallway at night.
Best hunter in the county.
Just hunting the wrong game.
Here's what nobody tells you: **your brain is going to collect something.**
What you notice. What you replay. What you rehearse. What you keep looking for.
So what have you got it aimed at?
**Aim it at better.
Hunt for better.
On purpose. Today.**

Sometimes what you're reacting to today isn't really about today.
The heart pounds. The stomach tightens. The shoulders come up. Somebody says something, gives you a look, or pushes the right button—and there you go.
Same reaction. Same TV rerun.
Why?
Your brain knows how to do it.
It learned from experiences, memories, repetition, and emotional conditioning. And when something today matches what it already knows, the old program can run automatically.
That's why **coping isn't the same as changing at the root.**
You can try to think positively over an old program. You can distract yourself from it. You can manage it.
Or you can change the memories and emotional patterns your brain keeps pulling from.
**Change the memory. Change the response.**
And here's another part of it: start giving your brain something better to collect.
I had Patty start writing down the good stuff she noticed. Small things. The hot coffee. Something beautiful. Somebody being kind. A moment that felt good.
She started hunting for better.
That's the idea behind the Happy Journal.
Not just positive thinking.
**Positive action.**
Before you go to bed tonight:
1. Catch one good thing.
2. Say it out loud.
3. Write it down.
4. Tomorrow, hunt again.
Your brain already knows how to collect.
Give it something better to collect.
And when the old trophies are still hanging on the wall, don't argue with them.
**Tap it out. Update the memory.**
Same good eye.
Brand-new season.
**Update the trophies. Season's open.**

🎵 HUNT FOR BETTER — LYRICS
I was a world-class collector of the ugly.
Every no I ever heard, I had it mounted and lit.
Every boss, every fight, every sideways look —
buddy, I could track a slight through six feet of snow.
Best hunter you ever met.
Just hunting the wrong game.
Hunt for better! (hunt for better!)
New trophies on the wall!
Same good eye, brand new season —
hunt for better, that's all!
So I had myself a dumpster day.
Took the whole sorry collection down.
Forty years of mounted misery,
out the door and gone by noon.
You can't hang the new stuff on a full wall.
Somebody had to make some room.
Hunt for better! (hunt for better!)
New trophies on the wall!
Same good eye, brand new season —
hunt for better, that's all!
Now I'm out at dawn with the same sharp eye,
and brother, the woods are full.
My sweetheart's laugh. The good hot coffee.
A grandbaby on the way. A stranger waving me through.
I bag 'em, I mount 'em, I walk that hallway nightly.
Finest collection in town.
Hunt for better! (hunt for better!)
New trophies on the wall!
Same good eye, brand new season —
hunt for better, that's all!
Now here's the truth about a collector:
he don't ever quit collecting. They can't.
That eye's gonna hunt something till the day it closes.
The only question that ever mattered
is what you got it aimed at.
Hunt for better! (hunt for better!)
New trophies on the wall!
Same good eye, brand new season —
hunt for better, that's all!
Update the trophies.
Season's open.
