What Is Somatic Therapy? Thirty Years In, Here's the Straight Answer"

Somatic therapy works with the body instead of the story. Thirty years in this field, here's the straight answer on what it is, what it's genuinely good at, and the one place it stops.

Most videos on this either sell it or trash it. I'm doing neither.

Somatic work does real things. It gets you out of your head. It teaches you to read your own signals, which most people can't do at all when they start. It's gentle enough that you don't get flooded, and that matters if some other approach already put you through the wringer.

And it changes your state. When you shake, when you breathe, when you release the psoas, your body genuinely comes down. That part isn't hype.

Here's where it stops. Calming the body changes what you feel right now. It doesn't touch the reference your brain is running. So you settle, you sleep better for a night, then something happens and you're right back in it.

That's not you failing at somatic work. That's somatic work doing exactly what it does, and nothing past it.

Your body is an autobiography. It's expressing something. It isn't storing it.
