And then they show you videos and pictures — holding hands and walking, going to the park. All of a sudden, your memory about him has been shifted from good to bad. Now, how do people do that with bad memories? The exact same way. They go to a bad memory, and it's really bad. Well, first of all, it may not be bad. It may be normal for you. Then you start introducing new information into the memory, and then you ask really intelligent questions: "What did I do wrong? Why would they do that to me? What happens if they do it again? Will no one love me and not like me because of what happened?" So now you're adjusting the memories. By the way, this compounds the memory and makes it worse. Some of the people I've had the most opportunity and challenge with are the people who spend years in therapy, adding more, dumping onto a memory. Now your whole identity is messed up by dumping on a memory.
